About

Unaddressed historical injustices rooted in the colonization processes continue to exclude indigenous peoples of their lands, territories and resources and prevent them from exercising their rights to development, survival and participation in decision-making.

Jaslika’s webinar amplifies the voices of indigenous women activists and rights’ defenders from different parts of the globe - from Latin America, to Australia, East Africa and Europe. Our diverse panel of experts will discuss the right of indigenous women and peoples to be treated equally, with respect and justice. Speakers will also talk about land rights, their relationship with the environment, their role in traditional knowledge and biodiversity preservation, and the impact of the persistent denial of their human rights on the health, safety and well-being of indigenous communities.

The four-member panel will include Kenya's Lucy Mulenkei, Executive Director, Indigenous Information Network (IIN) and co-chair of the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB); Sandra Creamer, CEO of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Alliance, lawyer and Adjunct Professor in Public Health at the University of Queensland; Tarcila Rivera Zea, Continental Coordinator of the Continental Network of Indigenous Women of the Americas (ECMIA) founder of the International Indigenous Women’s Forum (FIMI) and Vice-President of CHIRAPAQ, Center for Indigenous Cultures of Peru; and Anne Nuorgam, Sami politician, member of the Sámi Parliament of Finland and current Chair of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Jaslika Director, Dr. Sheila P. Wamahiu, who is a leading expert in education and child rights in East Africa will facilitate the webinar supported by Jaslika Associate, Declan Magero.

This webinar is interactive, so the audience will be able to write-in their questions to the panel members during the course of the webinar.
