About This Webinar

Target 16.2 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) explicitly calls on the world community to : “end abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against and torture of children” by 2030. Yet, violence against children remains pervasive. According to the 2020 Global Status Report on Preventing Violence Against Children, one out of two children aged 2–17 years suffer some form of violence each year.

Our four-member panel will consist of Dr Najat Maalla M’jid, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) on Violence against Children; Dr Amaya Gillespie, who was the Director of the UN Secretary General’s 2006 Study on Violence against Children and is currently Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology, School of Public Health, Australia; Dr Anees Jillani, is an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, and an active Board member of the Islamabad-based SPARC (Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child) and Ms Caroline Muhwezi, Generation Unlimited Programme Specialist at UNICEF Nigeria and a lawyer and a registered advocate of the High Court of Uganda.

Jaslika Director, Dr. Sheila P. Wamahiu, who is a leading expert in education and child rights in East Africa will facilitate the webinar supported by Jaslika Associate, Declan Magero with special guest, Halima Ismail Dolif, who was the first Speaker of Kenya Children’s Assembly.

This webinar is interactive, so the audience will be able to write-in their questions to the panel members during the course of the webinar.

Objectives

  1. Trigger conversations and create awareness on the impact of persisting violence against children

  2. Discuss meaningful involvement of children as strategy for prevention of violence

  3. Reflect on challenges and progress since the 2006 UN Secretary-General’s Study on Violence against Children

  4. Promote learning on the roadmap for the protection of children from violence in response to the COVID pandemic
