Jaslika in partnership with the Regional Education Learning Initiative (RELI) is convening a 3-day conference at the KCB Leadership Centre in Karen, Nairobi under the theme: ‘From Data and Commitment to Action: Creating a Movement for Girls’ Education?’. The conference, which will take place between 16 to 18 April, 2024 will bring together about 100 stakeholders from Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya to explore actionable solutions to the persisting exclusion of children, especially girls living in adversity, from the mainstream of education in the East African region. It will build on insights and issues emerging from a qualitative research study on Girls’ Education in East Africa, undertaken by Jaslika in 2022 - 2023, amplifying Southern Voices, providing space for conversations and actions to revitalise the movement of and for girls’ education.
Conference Focus
The convening will be centred around the following five objectives: To disseminate and discuss the findings from the study on ‘Creating impact at the local level for girls’ education in East Africa in the context of other evidence and the broader ecosystem.

To deepen our understanding on the persisting bottlenecks to girls’ education and how to overcome them by pushing for a systematic shift, mindset shift, and collaboration shift to transform girl education.
To enable dialogue on effective contextualised practices for implementing evidence-based, innovative, and sustainable solutions to transform girls' education in East Africa.
To come up with tangible recommendations and actionable steps to address gender-based barriers in education across East Africa.
To launch the Girls’ Education project in the Regional Education Learning Initiative Africa (RELI Africa).
Objectives
Conceptual clarity: This sub-theme will build consensus on the concepts of gender equality in and through education using an intersectional lens.
Systemic shift and Accountability for commitments to gender equality for Education: This sub-theme will speak to the process of shifting to an education system that enables a learning environment that is supportive of the development of all learners, especially girls.
Mindset shift: Deconstructing what we “think” we know to shape social norms that promote gender equality, empowering and engaging parents and innovating community-led interventions that contribute to learning developmental milestones in Girl Education.
Collaboration shift: Sustaining work on Girl Education necessitates greater collaboration for greater impact. This sub-theme will explore ways of building a movement for girls’ education that is anchored in community organising and action.
Data and knowledge gaps for girls’ education: Identifying data and knowledge needed to improve the quality and use of intersectional, gender-responsive data for more effective, targeted planning and efficient tracking of gender equality outcomes.
